The song is my original composition in Spanish QUIEN NO TE AMARÁ.

For those outside Germany: apparently I vaguely resemble actress Barbara Wussow who became famous through the 80s TV series „Schwarzwaldklinik“ – and who I consider to be a very beautiful woman 😎 I don‘t know the series because at that time I lived in Puerto Rico… some people pointed it out after seeing the clip of me singing the Star Trek Theme 😅

Unpopular opinion: Don’t call me or latinos in general “temperamentvoll” or “passionate” 🤨

Es ist nämlich so: ich habe in Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 auch Menschen kennengelernt, die ruhig, verschlossen und sehr unaufgeregt sind - fahr mal raus aufs Land und in die Bergdörfer, da entsprechen die Menschen eher dem Klischee über Norddeutsche. Karibisch herb sozusagen 😅

Auf der anderen Seite erinnere ich mich an Zugfahrten in 🇩🇪, wo eine Gruppe nicht mehr ganz junger Frauen ausgerüstet mit Prosecco und Kartenspiel laut lachend das ganze Bahnabteil unterhalten haben. Sind Deutsche deswegen jetzt temperamentvolle Menschen?

Die Aussage ist aber auch deswegen schwierig, weil die Leute damit zum Ausdruck bringen, dass sie ihr Schubladendenken auf mich projizieren. Dabei schwingt bei “temperamentvoll” auch immer etwas mit, was ich ganz sicher nicht bin: temperamentvoll meint öfters auch Menschen, die leicht zu Wutausbrüchen neigen, und ich bin zwar jemand der im Alltag laut singt und gerne lacht, aber ich achte auch sehr darauf, nicht jeden Menschen in jeder Situation mit meinen negativen Gefühlen zu konfrontieren.

Und noch etwas - ich weiß, die Leute sind sich dessen nicht bewusst, wenn sie “temperamentvoll” sagen. Aber leider ist es in einem Land wie Puerto Rico, das Kolonialismus erfahren hat, auch so dass die Urbevölkerung von den Kolonialherren für wild, leidenschaftlich, undiszipliniert und eben temperamentvoll gehalten wurde. Man musste ihnen die Lebensart dann mit Hilfe von Religion und europäischer Vernunft austreiben. Wenn Europäer heute Latinos “temperamentvoll” oder englisch “passionate” nennen, dann ist nicht nur inhaltlich falsch, aber es schwingt in unseren Ohren immer diese alte koloniale Sound mit. Auch deswegen: don’t call us temperamentvoll. Please 🙏🏽 🤨

In this song I imagined a woman talking to her lover who is a sailor and goes away on a ship for a loooong time. At the time I wrote it I actually had neighbors where he was a captain on a freight ship line and was away from his wife for months sailing the seven seas. So this is where I took my inspiration from 🙂

“Ein Quintett, das Publikum und die Magie des Auftritts” - vielen Dank an Michael Henke für den tollen Nachbericht im Kölner Stadtanzeiger zum Konzert vom Freitag!

Konzert mit Eigenkompositionen im Innenhof von Burg Gleuel begeisterte

Ein lauer Sommerabend im Innenhof von Burg Gleuel. Kühle Drinks vom Getränkewagen und dazu vorne auf der Bühne eine vom Jazzclub Hürth engagierte Formation, die gut zu diesem Abend passt: das in Hamburg gegründete Judith Tellado & Paulo Pereira Quintett. Dabei gibt die aus Puerto Rico stammende und seit 2008 in Deutschland lebende Sängerin Tellado gleich zu Anfang die atmosphärische Richtung des Abends vor: „Wenn ich auf der Bühne Spaß habe, hat das Publikum auch Spaß. Das ist wie Magie.“ Und tatsächlich springt der Funke von der mit Judith Tellado perfekt harmonierenden Band mit Paulo Pereira (Saxofon), Georg Sheljasov (Piano, Gitarre), Werner Kolb (Kontrabass) und Knud Feddersen (Schlagzeug) schnell auf die Zuhörer über.

Die Musik der fünf erinnert an Jazz-Standards, an Chansons mit komplexen Songstrukturen aus den 1950er- und 1960er-Jahren, an die große Zeit des Bossa Nova, an Soul- Musik, und manchmal weht ein Hauch von Fado durch die Musik. Und doch sind alle Lieder Eigenkompositionen, von denen die meisten von der CD „Galego“ stammen und eine ganz eigene Geschichte haben.

Die Klangfarbe von Tellados Stimme und Pereiras Saxofon- und Querflötenspiel scheinen wie füreinander geschaffen, umschmeicheln sich, sowohl im Zusammenklang als auch in den dialogischen Passagen. Dabei ist ihr kunstfertiger Gesang und Spiel nie artistischer Selbstzweck, auch nicht in den eingestreuten kurzen Improvisationen, sondern steht immer im Dienste der Songs. Durch sie ziehen sich eingängige und doch komplexe Melodien, die von Swing und lateinamerikanischer Musik inspirierten abwechslungsreichen Rhythmen getragen werden.

Tellado hat ihre Texte auf Spanisch, ihrer Muttersprache, Englisch, Portugiesisch und im Stück „Sag mir nicht, was ich tun soll“ auch mit deutschen Einsprengseln geschrieben. Gut, dass sie den weniger Sprachmächtigen den oft biografischen Anlass und die Grundzüge der in den Songs erzählten Geschichten charmant erläutert.

These are the singers I like the most! Who is your favorite singer that should have made the list?

9) Oleta Adams

A fantastic singer/songwriter for soul and gospel. A very powerful voice with great projection that carries an honest interpretation. „You’ve Got To Give Me Room“ and „I’ve Got To Sing My Song“ are among my favorites.

8) Jamie Cullum

I like his versatility that features a wide range from classic jazz standards to singer/songwriter-pop. Great pianist also. And his British accent sounds so refreshing when he sings jazz!

7) Gal Costa

Has a very sincere way of singing in her interpretation of songs. I love her live recordings of Tom Jobim Bossa Nova classics, like „A Felicidade“, „Chega De Saudade“ and others.

6) Cesária Évora

I love that she's deeply emotional in her interpretation of Cape Verdean Morna music. Her Creole Portuguese is a lovely language for singing also.

5) Sarah Vaughan

A very elegant singer in every note. Her recording of „Tenderly“ is my favorite interpretation of this wonderful jazz standard. Her vocal range is amazing, when she sings these low notes it gives me the chills!

4) Sylvia Rexach

This Puertorican singer had a very passionate way of composing that I adore. Not many recordings with her own voice exist, but those that we can listen to are very intimate interpretations of her songs featuring just guitar and Sylvia’s longing voice.

3) Ella Fitzgerald

The example of a vocalist who deeply enjoys the act of singing. I love her playfulness when she does her scat improvisations or when she spontaneously changes the lyrics of a song. She really lived the moment!

2) Rubén Blades

I like his honesty, his versatility and his exploration in composing. He's a composer who constantly tries new things and who's unapologetic in the topics of his songs that are often very political. To me he's the greatest salsa composer and innovator of this genre.

1) Barbra Streisand

She's what every singer wants to be: a great performer, very passionate and emotional without losing grip of her technique. Among my favorite recordings are „Send In The Clowns“, „The Way We Were“ and „Tell Him“.

What is your comfort food?

This puertorrican stew is what brings me back from the dead on those days when I need a break.

I guess in Germany you might call it Eintopf but I call this my version of the puertorrican Sancocho. And yes, it is maybe too hot to eat this hearty stew full of vegetable goodness but every time I cook it, I find myself in familiar places with familiar voices. Its aromas reassure me that I can disconnect and have a moment of peace.
