The german government is reducing funds for a lang The german government is reducing funds for a language integration program that has been one of the greatest examples of a progressive society. I am the result of that integration course. Learning German changed my life. I am not the only one who thinks this decision is a bad idea, it was met with widespread criticism from municipalities, regions and immigration experts. Learning languages is a human superpower and if the government fails you, fight to learn them anyway!

7 DAYS 7 PAINTINGS: No. 7 “We’re all mad here” We 7 DAYS 7 PAINTINGS: No. 7 “We’re all mad here”

We’re ending the weeklong series with this painting I did in 2019. And I have to confess that after 18 years in Germany, I still feel like Alice in Wonderland. I painted my teacup because I really like tea, and I painted it falling onto the instruments that surround me when I sing at my concerts. And in my arms, the white rabbit reminds me how quickly time passes. Amidst the chaos, I wrote a quote from the Cheshire Cat: “Oh, you can’t help it. We’re all mad here.” When you’re an immigrant, you can feel like you’re in an absurd world, and what better remedy than those little moments to laugh at yourself. Sure, sometimes you say silly things. Sure, you have an accent. But who cares? Amidst the chaos of learning a new language, starting a new career, cultural differences, and the distance from those we love, it’s a relief to know that we can still laugh at all this madness. And you, what have you laughed at today?

7 DAYS 7 PAINTINGS: No. 6 “The Mechanics of Love” 7 DAYS 7 PAINTINGS: No. 6 “The Mechanics of Love”

I made this painting because I needed to give myself hope. The original painting was titled “Moriviví,” but after almost ten years, it became “The Mechanics of Love.” I depicted myself older, with gray hair and surrounded by weeds, a symbol of economic prosperity. In my arms, I protect the bird-fish that no longer flies, and behind me are the ruins of the past. And from the pain, water springs forth, a symbol of life. When we have been suffering for a long time, it can be difficult to give ourselves the opportunity to heal and feel happiness. Our emotions, like a machine, need to be oiled again with a little hope, if possible. Hope is not the only way to heal our hearts. Laughter, I believe, is the elixir par excellence. I’ll tell you how I did it in the next video when I bring you the last painting in this series.

7 DAYS 7 PAINTINGS: No. 5 “Despertar” (Awakening) 7 DAYS 7 PAINTINGS: No. 5 “Despertar” (Awakening)

I painted myself as a mangrove. After several years in Germany, when my hair had grown so long that I had to roll it up, I decided to paint myself as a mangrove, one of those trees that tolerate salt water. Above my head, I painted my Puerto Rican güiro, my painting palette, my magical animal: the fish-bird, a rose, and the Hamburg City Hall building, where I went several times a week to work as a tour guide because being an artist brings you a lot of joy but doesn’t always bring you a lot of money. Behind it is another mangrove in the shape of a hand, holding a seagull taking flight, a symbol of the desire for emotional freedom. The inspiration for this painting was the song “Before the Show,” one of my first compositions in which I talk about how I arrived in Germany with a suitcase and a single yellow dress that my mother gave me. But at some point you have to shake off the sadness, right? I’ll tell you about that in the next video when I bring you another one of my paintings.

7 DAYS 7 PAINTINGS: No. 4 “My own invention” I ma 7 DAYS 7 PAINTINGS: No. 4 “My own invention”

I made this painting in 2012 when I was already working as a singer. And I wonder how many people work in a profession other than the one they studied? I don’t know, but I’m one of them. I studied linguistics, but when I emigrated to Germany, singing in the shower became my school. And I realized that my new reality as an artist was a river of risks, tears, frustrations, joys, and lots and lots of laughter. And that even with fear of the desert of economic and cultural uncertainty, I had to show myself to the world as I was. Many of my paintings are inspired by real dreams I’ve had because, as they say, dreaming is free! But waking up to reality is another story. Join me in the next video when I show you my awakening in my next painting.

7 DAYS, 7 PAINTINGS: No. 3 „5 años después“ (5 yea 7 DAYS, 7 PAINTINGS: No. 3 „5 años después“ (5 years later)

I made this painting five years after moving to Germany. In it, I depicted the things I wanted in my life and the things I didn’t want even before moving to Germany. Before I turned eighteen, I knew I didn’t want to have children and that I wanted to see different places around the world. But when I became an immigrant, my wishes came true. I depicted all those things in this painting. I hung up my Puerto Rican identity and let it dry like a banana leaf. I unrolled the baby clothes. I embraced my new home represented by the city of Hamburg and wanted to put down roots and flourish, even though many aspects of my personality were still in my suitcase, a symbol of transition. At my feet lay the uncertainty of being an artist: a profession unknown to me. I learned that our identities are not static because when our reality changes, we also change. Wow... and how I had to change... I’ll tell you about this in the next video when I bring you another one of my paintings.

7 DAYS, 7 PAINTINGS – No. 2 “EL SUEÑO DEL RECUERDO 7 DAYS, 7 PAINTINGS – No. 2 “EL SUEÑO DEL RECUERDO”

Another painting I did in 2009, when I had been living in Germany for a year, was El sueño del recuerdo (The Dream of Remembrance). The inspiration was a real dream in which I was in a dark city and above it floated a boat containing a city similar to Old San Juan, the capital of Puerto Rico. The people in that floating city were enjoying a party, but I was too far away to reach them. So I had to paint it, but I added some details – the hands in a gesture of revelation of the pain I refuse to accept. And in the center, the bird-fish, symbol of constant change. In its beak, the „cundeamor“ flower, symbol of emotional healing. Tell me, have you ever painted or drawn your dreams? Do you think dreams can reveal our desires? I’ll tell you about this in the next video when I bring you another one of my paintings.

7 DAYS, 7 PAINTINGS - No. 1 “SUEÑO” I made this p 7 DAYS, 7 PAINTINGS - No. 1 “SUEÑO”

I made this painting, titled “Sueño” (Dream), in 2009, one year after migrating to Germany. I painted some of the things I missed about Puerto Rico, my home country. And for the first time, the bird-fish appeared, without legs and always flying. It is a magical animal I invented to represent constant change and my desire to survive the pain of migration. On my head, you can see elements of the Puerto Rican architecture of the Old San Juan, as well as the tropical forest of El Yunque, the maga flower (Puerto Rico’s national flower), banana leaves, and a small boat with suitcases, a symbol of migration. This reminds me of something Puerto Rican composer Sylvia Rexach sang: Remembering is living that yesterday again.
This painting was just the beginning because after the dream comes the awakening. I will tell you about this in the next video when I bring you another of my paintings.

I have another “major to minor” song for you! I re I have another “major to minor” song for you! I recorded two versions for my song “Under Neon Stars”, one in a cheerful major key and a more bluesy one in minor - which one do you like better? The first version is as I recorded the song for its original release in the key of C major. For the second version we changed the key to C minor… same lyrics, same tempo, but the melody and chords transformed to the minor key. I wonder if I like that one even better 🤔 What do you think?
